October 19, 2020. ikon.5 architects is pleased to share the news that two of the new residence halls we’re designing for Cornell University will be named for distinguished alumnae—Ruth Bader Ginsburg (BA ’54) and Toni Morrison (MA ’55). These student residences are part of the larger North Campus Residential Expansion (NCRE) project, which will add 2,000 student beds, dining facilities, and recreation spaces to North Campus, realizing a long held university goal to house first‐ and second‐year students on campus. Currently in construction with the first phase slated for completion in Fall 2021, the NCRE is conceived as a community-within‐ a‐community comprising two sites organized as villages of three‐ to five‐story buildings grouped around courtyards. Designed to complement its neighbors, the NCRE buildings will be clad in red and grey terra cotta, with highly transparent, glazed ground levels to encourage social connection. Like the trailblazing women after whom the first two buildings of the project will be named, the NCRE “will mark a new chapter in residential life at Cornell,” said Cornell President Martha E. Pollack, “revitalizing and in many ways reinventing the student experience here.”
