The Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library, the country's most technologically advanced health sciences library, creates a new campus green out of a large surface parking lot in Washington, D.C. This new quadrangle reclaims the historic essence of Howard University's distinguished 1935 campus master plan, connecting the buildings of Howard's schools of medicine, dentistry and nursing with the original Freedman's Hospital, our nation's first hospital for freed slaves. The library and its siting reassert the university's courageous original planning that claimed and expressed the roots of American democracy.
